Hello,

I have a problem with my SSA-adapter in a RS/6000-node,
the problem is when I run lscfg then I get the following output:

root@dbs143:/# lscfg -vl ssa0
DEVICE LOCATION DESCRIPTION

ssa0 10-70 n/a

Part Number................. 09L5632
FRU Number.................. 09L2090
Serial Number...............S9106060
EC Level.................... F24382
Manufacturer................IBM053
ROS Level and ID............2500 0000
Loadable Microcode Level....05
Device Driver Level.........00
Displayable Message.........SSA-ADAPTER
Device Specific.(Z0)........SDRAM=064
Device Specific.(Z1)........CACHE=00
Device Specific.(Z2)........UID=0000000629886370
Device Specific.(YL)........P2-I2

so my problem is that the SSA-adapter is in state N/A,
when I run the system in diagnostic mode, then there is no problem found concerning the SSA-adapter and sees al the SSA-disks, and when I run in normal mode then the SSA-adapter is thus N/A and cant see any SSA-disks,
I have installed the latest microcode but that doesnt help either, who can help me?

Thanx,
Rudy

yeah bill is right

run lsdev -Cc adapter and send us the output.

since the state shows defined..
ssa0 Defined 10-70 IBM SSA 160 SerialRAID Adapter

the adapter cannot be used by the system because all the information is recorded in the customized database but the device cannot be seen by the system.but u say when u are trying to run in diagnostics mode u are able to see the adpater and the disks.

did u run diag command
and try running the diagnostic routines,
under that u can try runnig the system verification.
that will list all the devices. are u able to see ur adapter there.

Hi Sendhilk,

Yes when I run in diagnostics mode then the SSA-adapter works fine and I can see the SSA-disks connected to it,
When I run the diag in normal mode and run system verification then I get the following message:

A PROBLEM WAS DETECTED ON Wed May 9 16:53:03 DFT 2001 801

The Service Request Number(s)/Probable Cause(s)
(causes are listed in descending order of probability):

d4000: Use the Service Guide for your SSA Adapter or SSA Subsystem.
SSA-SUBSYSTEM P2-I2

Use Enter to continue.

So thats a strange thing that it works fine in diagnostics mode and not in the normal mode, I have something heard of the microcode for SSA-adapters, so I have downloaded and installed the latest microcode but that doesnt help either.

Greetings,
Rudy

I'd say call IBM H/W support on this one. If you have a service contract, it is a free call.

Question - did you download the CORRECT firmware for your adapter ?

Bill.

Hi Bill,

Yes we have a service contract, but I wanted to try to solve the problem myself.
What is the correct firmware for this adapter? And do I know if I have the correct one?

Rudy

select your adapter and follow link
All microcode and also latest level of aix fixes as well..........
==================

Adapter.....
Status of Light Meaning
Off
Both SSA connectors are inactive. If disk drives or other SSA adapters are
connected to these connectors, either those disk drives or adapters are failing,
or their SSA links are not active.

Permanently on
Both SSA links are active (normal operating condition).

Slow Flash
Only one SSA link is active.
----------------------

Using Command Line :-

lscfg -v -l ssa0 | grep ROS
ROS Level and ID............6701

Using SMIT
Enter the SMIT menu "Hardware Diagnostics" using the smit short cut :-
smit diag
Select "Current Shell Diagnostics" and press Enter
Press Enter to continue at the License Info page
Select "Task Selection(Diagnostics, Advanced Diagnostics, Service Aids, etc.)" and
press Enter
Select "Display Hardware Vital Product Data" and press Enter

hi,

d4000 means the SSA adapter is physically damaged and you need to replace the FRU. call your IBM rep. and have him replace the adapter.

Thanks

Farrukh

Hi, I have deleted all SSA-software from the system and installed the latest software and microcodes again and now it works!

So thanx all for your help!

Rudy
