sqwebmail won't authenticate

I have a RH 9 server with qmail and sqwebmail-4.0.7.20040902 installed. When I log in, I get authentication errors. I did not modify anything when I ran the install scripts, and I have tried many combinations of modules to use in /usr/local/share/sqwebmail/authdaemonrc, and I specify authdaemon.plain for the version. I would like to authenticate against the local passwd/shadow file. When I restart the daemons, it indicates that it is using what I specify.

Any ideas anyone?
