Squid: debug_options for tracing and profit

Hi all,
I'm trying to figure out what Squid could possibly be doing that takes forever on some requests.
I've gotten as far as figuring out that something happens between:
fwdConnectStart
fwdConnectEnd

What exactly do those do, and can I improve granularity? What setting should I use? Thanks in advance.
