I may be in the wrong place- as I think the problem is on the windows side but maybe someone could get me started in the right direction.

I have squid proxy running on a machine and I use smb_auth for authentication against a win nt 4.0 PDC.

It has worked fine for quite a while. I have the proxyath file in the netlogon share and all that.

Today it stopped working. So I ran smb_auth from the command line with the debug switch and what I get back is:

/usr/lib/squid/smb_auth -W NEBULA -U 10.1.1.8 -d
rpeck **********
Domain name: NEBULA
Pass-through authentication: no
Query address options: -U 10.1.1.8 -R
Domain controller IP address: 10.1.1.8
Domain controller NETBIOS name:
ERR

I'm not sure what would change on the WINNT box that it would stop working- it seems like it can't get the netbios name I guess.

Any help or at least a shove in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Have you patched the Windows machine recently? I could see any number of Windows "Security" patches having unintended impact upon authentication by non-windows devices.

It was something to do with the wins server. I restarted it and things seem to be o.k. again.
