Square Boxes where letters used to be

I was setting up a suse 10 sp2 server and now all the letters appear as square boxes. This only affects the graphical screens. It will boot ok to a terminal prompt. Is there a way to set the graphics setting from a linux prompt?
I am running the gnome desktop.

anybody have any suggestions? besides starting from scratch.

My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my knowledge.

My first guess would be that something happened to delete or corrupt the default or chosen font you are using. Try selecting a different font.

It's probably a font, I agree. Try a different one.
