sqlmaint.exe failed?

I frequently get this error message for scheduled backup jobs. Does anyone know what this means or how I can avoid it? I haven't been able to find much helpful information from Microsoft.

sqlmaint.exe failed. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 22029). The step failed.
