sqlexec account domain admin level or not

SInce 4.21 Microsoft has recommended that the sqlexec account should be a domain admin. I have heard and seen workarounds, but I have a lack of confidence in their approach. If the sql server is going to be and enterprise type server (being accessed by thin and fat client apps, using alerts and outlook for mail, and working with Biztalk and AD) isn't this still the best solution?
