We run SQL2000 on an NT box.

According to my "hardware guy", we cannot do a direct tape backup of the server because "if we try to backup a database that is receiving data, the tape will hang up".

This does not make sense to me, but more important, if this is true, how do we do backups for this server?

Any help would be appreciated.

You can't simply backup the database files while the database is still attached and in use.

Use the SQL Server BACKUP command to take a back up of the database (which results in a separate single operating system file). Then you can backup that backup file with your normal network backup software.
