Hi guys.

I did something without certainty but it seemed to work...I installed Sql 2000 on my laptop (running Windows Vista Business) as a named instance. I did not have any previous Sql Server installation (no instances whatsoever). Then I installed Sql 2005 because I wanted it to be the default instance. Throughout the 2005 installation (Enterprise Edition but only client tools installed, obviously) I was not prompted what kind of instance I wanted. The installation went smoothly. So I am able to connect to the named instance of 2000 both from 2000 and from 2005 Management Studio, but I cannot connect to 2005. I tried "." and "(local)" as server names, still nothing. The error mentioned Named Pipes first, then I changed to TCP/IP with the same result. The help suggests that this happens normally when the service has not started. When I look in Services, the only service I see is the named instance of 2000 running...

Am I missing something? What are the proper steps to install 2005 as your default instance and 2000 as a named instance? If 2005 apparently installed successfully, why are the services not showing?

Thanks!

Sounds like the SQL 2005 instance didn't install correctly. Try running the installer again and see if there are any errors in the log after the installer has finished.

It looks like that' s what it is. The log from the previous installation should still be on the hard drive, right? What would be its location? This installation is on my laptop. Obviously, Enterprise Edition doesn' t seem to be the best choice. I thought it would just install the client and server components it needs. I will uninstall it and install Standard Edition to see if it makes any difference.

Thanks.

I missed it before. Enterprise Edition can't be installed on Vista. You have to install the developer edition, personal edition, or express edition.

Sorry I didn't catch that the first time, it's been one of those days.

MrDenny, I am more appreciative of your help knowing that your attention should be focused on something else...Thank you so much.

I removed Enterprise Edition and installed Developer Edition. It works just fine.
