Newbie here.

Which is better to use for the filtering/softing I desire from my data - a stored procedure from sql or inside a query of crystal report?

Stored Procedure will almost always outperform straight SQL.

One big downside to SP's is if you need to pass multiple values using a parameter.

The other advantage to an SP is that if something changes in the database, just adjust the SP, you never have to touch the report again.

Views are also a nice alternative.
