Is it necessary to install service packs on a pc with only Client-Components installed? On SQL 7 and/or SQL 2000.

It makes sense on Server-Side, but what about Client-Side?

I think yes. The service packs have updates to various things including MDAC, it may mean that functions that work fine on the server or another client machine dont work as expected on the client machine in question. To my mind it is always best to have all machines using the same swerice pack

It is critical to upgrade the clients when the server is updated. There are many reasons for this. Here is one example of what could happen if you don't upgrade clients.

If you update the server to a new service pack and modify DTS packages, clients running older versions will not be able to update the packages. In some instances, they will not be able to execute the packages. Terry L. Broadbent - DBA
