We need to support an upcoming project that will require significant storage. We are considering using an HP LH3 (as powerful as we can make it). However, we intend on using dual Snap Storage servers from Quantum (almost 1/2 terrabyte each).

Has anyone used the type of configuration before. It seems very cost effective. Am I missing something. (We are not terribly concerned with throughput performance and are willing to suffer performance degradation for cost effectiveness.)

Thanks,
Ken

Well, you will have performance problems with the networked storage, as the database engine has to go across the network to perform all I/O. But you say you're OK with that.

You could also have database corruption issues if the network hiccups while a write operation is going on. This is scary, as sometimes you can't recover, except via backups. Even if your NAS is using RAID, you aren't protected against this.

The latter alone is enough to want me to avoid using the NAS for storing my database files.
