Hello,

We have access 2003 database that we want to upgrade to sql server. Should a purchase of sql server necessary for this? Is there a base version of sql server installed on a windows machine and how different is it from a purchase version? Thanks ...

yes and no

sql server is completely seperate from access and requires a "server" to be run from

no, there is NO implementation of sql server in windows that can be used

I suggest you read up on what sql server actually is before making this decision.
