Hello,

I was in the middle of running an update process on the server when the power went out in the building and the server turned off.

I re-started the server, but now when I open Enterprise Manager or Query Analyzer the whole thing just freezes.

Do I need to re-install SQL Server 2000 or is there something else I can try to recover my data?

Thanks.

Rgds.

Ouch ... a UPS sure would have come in handy. May need to invest in one.

Have you checked the Windows Event log to see if there are any application or system errors relating to SQL Server. May be a good place to start.

Thanks

Hey JayKush,

Thanks for the reply, Yes having an UPS would have been nice.

Fortunately the data on this server is being used for testing porpuses, it's just that I'd been doing some updates lately and I didn't want to do the work all over again.

I checked the logs and there's nothing there, except the one message about the unexpected shutdown.

Rgds.

Before you reinstall the SQL Server. Try to just reinstall the Client Tools.

I re-installed the client tools and now I can use query analyzer to communicate with some of the databases on my server like the Northwind sample database; however, I can not access the database that I was running the updates to when the power went out.
I checked the running processes and there are some processes that are running against the database that I need, but I can not kill them. I've tried using Enterprise Manager by right clicking the process and selecting "Kill Process" but that doesn't work.

Is there another way to kill the process?

Thanks.

Rgds.

You could issue the KILL command via Query Analyzer. The syntax is KILL <SPID> (ex. KILL 54)

Thanks for all the replies, they were all very helpful.

This is what I had to do:

I started in safe mode and re-named the database file as well as the log file, this allowed me to use Enterprise manager and browse my list of databases again. (I was not able to do that before). I'm in the process of doing a restore from a backup copy of the database.

I have suspect database in Enterprise manager, I'll deal with that after the restore finishes.

Thank you all again.

Rgds.
