We have recently installed a DSL. We do not wish to obtain our TCP/IP addresses from the provider because we would like our network to function even if the provider is down. Unfortunately we cannot connect to SQL 7.0 under this situation. Does anyone know how to set everything up so this will work? Right now we can disable DNS in network settings (on each workstation) and have the SQL 7.0, or enable DNS and have our connection to the net on the DSL

If you have DSL, you have at least one address from them. You are probably using a router with Name Address Translation. You have to do two things. Most routers with NAT (you may have to enlist the help of you ISP here) can pass requests off to another computer on a port by port basis. You tell the router to pass requests to the correct port (SQL Server uses 1433) on to you SQL Server's IP (like 192.168.0.? or 10.0.0.? or whatever.) To connect, you point the client to the address if the router. It looks like a SQL Server to the outside world. If the ISP uses DHCP to assign an address to your router, you have a problem. the address to which you connect from the outside may change.<br>

Also, you can't be using named pipes to get at the SQL server over the internet. You probable figured that out is you didn;t have it set for IP first off.
