Is it possible to use SQL Server Management Studio on a local machine to connect to a remote installation of SQL SERVER 2005
How do you stipulate the IP address and port number to use in SQL Server Management Studio?

Continuing the above question, if say your site has a number of categories in a MemberCats table ( for example categories of membership which rarely change ) and you want to add a new member category is it possible/advisable to create a new row in this table using SQL Server Management Studio or should you always create an admin web interface to do this say in ASP or Coldfusion

1. Most definately! How you connect, will depend on how the SQL Server was setup. Typically, the Management Studio will allow you to connect by server name, just type in the server name in the connect box and let the client connect in the best way. If you have trouble connecting to the server, you may have to adjust the footprint setting within the SQL Server to allow you access.

2. In the scenario you mention, I typically just add it myself. If there's going to be a lot of adding/editing of categories, I'd create a tool. Really...it's up to you. How much work are you willing to do compared to how long it would take to write a tool that will allow someone else to do it.

im in ur stakz, overflowin ur heapz!

Thanks very much for your help. Because these categories will be changed only very rarely, and because I'll be running the site myself, I'll use the Management Studio to update rows when I need to. That will save me a lot of time
