Ok, my company bought SQL Server 2000 a couple of years ago (2001). We purchased 310 CAL's, 15 CAL server licenses and 12 server licenses. THEN, we sent it back b/c the application we needed SQL for required 7 and not 2k. So, they reordered the same thing but in SQL 7.

On to the meat of the question.

I have ALL the paperwork for the license we purchased and sent back. I have NONE of the paperwork for the copy we kept.

Microsoft has told us to contact our reseller. Well, they got purchased and the people that own them now have enogh info to be dangerous, but not enough to be helpful. They have contacted Microsoft for us and MS verifys that we have the licenses, but can't give them any information. Arg....... soooo

All I need to do is get my CD Key out of the old server so that I can migrate the database and SQL Server to a new machine. (The old server is failing and we have to do this soon)

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Will

I'm a bit confused.

You had 1 copy of SS 2000 with license. You sent it back but kept the paperwork.

You say you are missing the paperwork for the copy you kept - what copy?

You then got 1 copy of SS 7. Didn't you get a license with it? Unless I'm totally mistaken, the 2000 and 7 version licenses are different.

What version is your current (failing) database?

Humm...

You should have hung on to the SQL 2000 version. You could have used your downgrade rights to install SQL 7 using your SQL 2000 license that you purchased. If you purchased the SQL 7 install in 2001, they may have simply sent you the SQL 7 media for your SQL 2000 licence. When you purchase SQL 2000 you have downgrade rights to install previous versions of the software. The same way you do if you purchase Windows 2003 Server but want to install Windows 2000 Server.

If they charged you the same price for the SQL 2000 and SQL 7 (which they probably did) they probably sold you SQL 2000 software and licenses then had you send back the SQL 2000 media and sent you a SQL 7 media.

In the box that the SQL 7 media came in should be the cd-key.

Ok, I'll try again.

I was not here duing the start of this whole thing. I now understand a lot of the licensing stuff, but w/o any of our info, it is impossible to get a new CD from MS.

The physical server is failing and must be replaced. That is why we need to get our info (heck, just the cd key would be enough).

When I say "paper work" I mean the license info from eopen, NO ORIGINAL INFO OR CD. I have nothing but a burned CD and confirmation from Microsoft that we are licensed.

Our IT people have NOTHING, no cd, no box, nothing.

I suspect that the cd's and info "went home" with someone and never made it back.

We would buy another copy, but we only have to survive 5-6 months on what we have b/c a new piece of software will be coming on line to replace the antiquated system we are running now.

You should be able to purchase new media from CDW or some other big name vendor. Just tell them that you lost your CD, but you have the license paperwork and you need new media that has a valid CD-Key. eOPEN should have the cd-key info on the site somewhere.
