Good Day Everyone!
SQL Server 2000 (sp4) on a Windows 2003 OS.
I have come across a situation that seemingly defies logic.
I have a 69 Gig database that when backed up to disk went down to a size of about 60 Gig. Now For one reason or another the backup job runs and I get a backup file of 9 Gigs. Nothing was purged. There is a chance that someone did a shrink database on it, but I can not say for sure. This happened while I was away for a few days.
I have moved the 9 Gig backup file to a test server and restored it into a new instance of SQL Server. It expands out to the 69 Gig I was used to seeing. (By the way the LDF comes in at 17 Gig now where before it was up in the sixties). No one is coming forward to say what happened, but I am perplexed because I was sure I saw in Books online that there is no compression in SQL Server 2000.
Would someone like to put forth a theory of what has happened. Naturally I am thrilled that I do not have 69 Gig of data in my backup file, but I need to know why.
Thank you in advance for your assistance!
Have a great day!
