I've installed SQL Server 2008 express on my new Dell PC that has Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.

I can't install the Management Studio Express 2008 for some reason. Running that installation results in installing SQL Server again, but not Mgmt. Studio.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Jerry Scannell

You need to download the SQL Express Management Studio installer. The normal SQL Express installer doesn't include SSMS.

I did attempt to install it using the mgmt. studio installer. I think I said that.

What happened, though, was it went into installing SQL server express instead.

Here's the URL for the SSMS express installer. This installer shouldn't include the database engine.

Interesting. Earlier this morning I removed SQL Server 2008 Express. I just successfully installed Mgmt. Studio.

Now I am going to re-install SQL server express and see what gives...

Thanks.

I am all set. What I did was install mgmt. studio first. Then I installed SQL server and everything is fine. I was able to attach all of my SQL Server databases and control them.

I don't know why installing the SQL client first didn't work. But when all else fails, do things differently and they may work out like this time.

Thanks for your responses...
