Hi All,

Just looking to get some guidance with regards to best practices for sizing disks for my SQL Installs. I can't seem to find any good documentation on this topic. If i have a data drive of lets say 500GB's, what should be my recommended disk size be for the following? I typrically get requests for new installs and only have the required file size of the Data drive. I'm looking for some sort of rule of thumb when it comes to estimating allocated drive sizes:

Data: 500GB
Log Drive: 50GB? 10% of the Data Drive?
Backup Drive:
TempDB Drive:
System Databases Drive:

Note the reason there are not a lot of suggestions is that the type of data is the driving factor. Sorry I cannot give exact sizes but here are some things to think about.

I would suggest a much bigger log drive. Your backup stratagy is also a factor in this.

For backup drive you need to take into account the type of backup being done. Do they create a full backup every night?

For TempDB drive you need to know how the data will be accessed. Will there be big temporary tables needed?

For the system drive remember that Microsoft adds files each time they do an update.
