I would like to know if it is necessary to have SQL Sever installed on a computer before you can use it. I have an Access database which can be accessed on a network. It has a front end and a back end. All the computers where the database is used have Access installed on them. This works okay. But I would like to change the back end to SQL Server. Is this possible without installing SQL Server on all the computers?

No, you do not need any SQL Server tools installed on the computers.

It's called SQL Server. Put it on a network server and link to it from Access.

projecttoday,
Im going to assume that you are using access 2007... open your backend access database and click the database tools tab and in the move data category click on sql server... it will walk you through converting your back end into a sql database. like genomon said save it on the shared drive of your network... then on all of your front end access databases delete the exsisting tables and import linked tables from the sql database. let me know if you need help on that you might have to set up a ODBC datasource to make the connection. and no none of your compurters need sql server on them because they will just be running access!
