All,

Just had a little issue on the SQL server.

* It seems that the SQL server Agent Service is playing up. Its not started, says cannot logon when you try and start.

Set the password in services - now the service starts.

After a few days we seem to go back * for no apparent reason.

There is the same issue with Veritas on this server - any ideas?

Seems to be services with lives of there own!

Dan

Hi Plank

Check with your network manager that he / she hasn't applied a security policy on that domain account. The only time I've seen this before is if the account has been denied "logon as a service" right.

HTH,

M.

And are you absolutely positive no domain admin or anyone with local Admin rights hasn't been playing around with the Service accounts and not telling you?

In a case like yours, I'd start auditing on the OS and SQL Server for changes like that. Just to see if someone is deliberately screwing around with you.

mutley1,

No - the Network admin guy is the one having the same issue with Veritas. Its mad. Its only a small network, with only 3 people with the admin password. We know nobody has touched it. Doubt it is the AD - because the username isnt changing. As soon as you retype the password in - it works again.

Catadmin,

I am 99.99999999% sure that nobody is mucking around with it. But saying that it could be the next step - at least we may be able to track something when it happens.

How would you go about this tracking?

Dan

Is it just SQL Server Agent that is having this issue? What about the SQL Service, what account is it running under? What OS and SQL version are you running? Does this happen often or only every now and again? What kinds of jobs do you have running? Do you have any jobs that are run at the same frequency as the account failing (i.e. I notice that x job is run every 3 days and I also notice that my service account dumps every 3 days at about the same time as my job)? Have you checked your security log in Event Viewer? Have you checked the SQL Server Agent log (in EM right-click SQL Server Agent, select Display Error Log...)? How did you change the service account that the service runs under (did you use Enterprise Manager or did you do it under the Services applet)? Have you taken Mutley's advice and looked at the security policy being applied to the server (looking for such things as log on as a service right)? How is the domain account set up (password never expires, user must change password at net logon, etc.)?

Plank,

You can use Profiler to audit SQL Server (it has the ability to audit no only changes, but additions to logins and roles). And you can use PerfMon (Performance Monitor) to audit the OS if your OS is a Windows 2000 Server or higher (don't know about NT).
