We are currently in the process of upgrading to SQL Server 2008 Enterprise edtition. We need to go the side by side route due to the move from 32bit - 64bit as well as some other issues.

The question that I have is in keeping the pre existing SQL Server's name. I plan on shutting down the existing server after backing it up and renaming our test SQL2008 database server to our production server's name. This way all of the ODBC connections should function in the same way.

Am I correct in my assumption as long as all login info and passwords are transferred over.

If you have Copied the usernames and passwords to the new server, then when you rename the server yes the usernames and passwords will stay.
