I have a client running a database on SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard. They are very concerned about processing power on the server box, and want to set up long-term auditing of logins. What is the lightest impact method to do that? Can a trace or Profiler session be set up from another server? Does that do anything to reduce the load on the primary server? How would log files be viewed? It doesn't seem that xEvents are fully implemented on 2008, is that true? Any suggestions for free or very inexpensive tools would help with this?
