I'm running SQL Server 2008 Standard. Does anyone know if CAL's for SQL Server 2008 R2 compatible with it? I've googled and binged, searched here, asked everyone I could think of, waited on hold with Microsoft, and haven't been able to find a definitive answer. I know that some of the newer CAL's (2012 and newer) are backwards compatible, but not specifically SQL 2008 R2 with 2008 Standard. My instinct tells me it is, but I need a clear answer. Any insight is appreciated.

I believe they are. At least they use to be. I might suggest you contact your supplier and see if they have a way of determining this.
