When you upgrade to SQL Server 2008 Enterprise, must you run it as 64 bit? Or is 32 bit still a viable option?

If 32 bit is still a viable option, is there anything that CANNOT be run if you don't use 64 bit? For instance, Do the databases need to stay in 2005 compatibility mode?

SQL 2008 comes in both x32 and x64.

There really is not much of a difference "per say".

With 64 bit you forego having to use AWE and such for larger amounts of installed RAM.

And in some, not all cases, x64 runs better.

Other than DBs staying in compat mode 80, this is not an issue of using x32 or x64.

Thanks

Thanks Jay!

The Operations manager was CONVINCED that SQL Server 2008 was only available in 64 bit version and if you tried to use the 32 bit version - you would not be able to upgrade your databases but have to leave them in 9.0 compatibility mode.

Thanks again!

Steffi,
Your operations manager is a tool.

And from the sounds of it he isn't a very useful tool.

I try.

I'm here all week. Don't forget to tip your waitress.
