Finally getting to the point where I can test upgrading to SQL Server 2005 from SQL2K. So, I installed SQL2K5, but where do I specify data and log file locations? In SQL2K I can specify the data location in setup, but I saw nothing like that in the SQL2K5 setup. Did I just miss it or can I not stray from the default location for the system data files?

When you get about half way through there's a tab where you can control the paths for all the files. Its in there. I don't have a screenshot handy that I can point you to.

Hmm... Looks like I need to remove and re-install. And pay better attention...

Thanks,

If you are just looking for setting where new database files go to, you can set them by right clicking on the server/instance name, select properties, then go to the Database Settings tab. There will be a place to enter the default location for mdf/ldf files.

Are you talking about specifying file locations during a restoration process?

The only way I know about upgrading a SQL2K db to a SQL2k5 db is to restore a SQL2K db backup file in a SQL2K5 computer. The restoration process will ask for file locations.

It was more a question for location of the default and system dbs.
