One of the notification options for SQL 2005 operators is 'Pager e-mail name'.

Is this a completely different function to a standard mobile phone text message?

Has anybody got this working and if so what equipment and software is required?

Dazed and confused

It's looking for an email address. All you need is access to an SMTP server just like for emailing some one.

They have to have that option because some of us still use pagers.

Actually, you can use it for sending messages to those poor on-call techs who have cellphones that can read email too. This way, at 2:00 a.m., if a job fails, you can page poor Stan and have him schlump all the way into work so he can restart a job that is meaningless but that the pointy-haired boss thinks is essential to operations. @=)

Yikes... I've been reading waaaaay too much Dilbert. @=)

MrDenny,

Some places don't allow VPN or any other type of remote connection. At my last job I couldn't even bring a cell phone into work. When we had a problem with a system, the vendor would ask us to let them remote in. They were never really happy when we said no, you have to come in here or talk me through it over the phone.

My current job allows remote access - which is great when I get paged at home. I can even bring my cell phone into work AND use it. Heck, I even have real glass windows to look outside.

This is true. Some places don't allow VPN, dial-in, etc. Fornitually most do.

I wish I could deny some of our vendors remote access into our databases.

Heehee. We have the same "don't allow vendors to remote in" here at our workplace. The Litespeed people weren't happy when they were trying to resolve a problem and weren't allowed to come into our servers.

Of course, the magic words of "HIPAA" and "SOX" do wonders for scaring some people away. @=)

SQLBill - Windows? Workplaces have windows? You mean there's something actually outside to look at?? @=)

Absolutely Catadmin.....I have a beautiful view of ..... the parking lot! But at least I get to see the weather and if it's dark or light outside BEFORE I leave the building.

I do have to say that it's hard getting used to it though. I worked for 25 years at jobs where there were no windows to the outside.
