Hi, I have installed sql server 2005 express edition on a pc running windows 2003 small business server SP2. From my XP machine which has the management tools I can telnet into this machine through port 1433 (I have statically set the tcp port) and can ping the machine fine but I cannot get the sql management tools to connect to the machine nor can I get the 2003 machine management tools to connect to the XP sql server. There are no firewalls going on either machine and I have set up the servers to allow remote connections on both names pipes and tcp/ip.

Just before I installed this I installed it successfully on a 2000 advanced server and the 2000 machine and XP machine work fine together from either machine.

Is there anything I could have missed or is a "quirk" of 2003 SBS?

Thanks

Did you install a named instance or a default instance? Is the SQL Browser running? What is the exact error that you are getting?

Now worries, Ive sorted it now, had to demote the server then get it on the right workgroup and it may only work by IP address and not computer name but at least its working now
