Hi experts,
I have just installed SQL Server 2005 on my xp home (standalone)_machine. However, when I try to connect it to the server, it couldn't do so. I am entering '(Local)' when it prompts for server name in the dialogue box.

So, what am I doing wrong?
Thanks in advance.

What is this Express edition or not?
If you use Express - it is installed as instance by default so use ".\SQLEXPRESS" as a server name or:
YourComputerName\SQLEXPRESS

Hi Boris,

I am trying to install sqlexpress 2005 on a non-networked Vista laptop. There didn't appear to be any errors during the installation, but it doesn't look as if there is an instance running, so I can't connect to anything other than the mysterious 'SQL Server Compact Edition'.

Do I need a Vista service running, and if so, how? Any 'idiot's guide info' would be useful (I'm the idiot!).

Thanks,
Henryk
