Hi,

I have been teaching myself SQL Server 2000 for a few months now using SAM's "Teach yourself SQL Server 2000" and Teach yourself T-SQL", together with the MS Press MCP study aids.

I have zero practical experience of SQL server, other then the exercises in the books and a number of my own db's that i've developed.

Is my self taught knowledge going to be sufficient to pass the certs or will i be left with a knowledge gap?

I'm going to say "no", only because I did something similar. I thought that if I bought the book, studied it, and had a bit of hands on experienc, I could take a swipe at it. I tried one practice test and bombed horribly!

The questions I experienced were all situational. It wasn't "how do you write a stored proc" it was "you have a data warehouse made up of 3 sql servers. If you wanted a user to have administrative access blah blah blah..."

Actually, that would be your best bet: try some of the practice exams that are available online. You may have way more knowledge than I did (and it wasn't really a whole lot), and you may ace the thing. But either way, the practice tests are a great way to gauge how ready you are.

Leigh, I've worked with SQL Server 7 & 2K for years and would have failed the exam if I relied only on personal experience. Most developers will not get the thorough exposure in day-to-day experience that is necessary to pass. It is not so much the depth as it is the breadth of information. That doesn't mean to neglect personal, working experience, cause it will certainly make it easier to do well on the test.

Sure, certs are not much of an indicator of ability, but studying and working through examples will force you to become familiar with the product.

Cut loose with the $100 for the Transcender or SelfTestSoftware exams and study hard on the topics covered in those exams' questions. Use as a guide for M$ documentation. If you can run a successfull consulting biz, you can pass the 70-229 exam! Good Luck!
