Does anyone know of a way to make an SQL 2000 SP3 server running on Windows 2003 Server prompt for a login and password when entering SQL while using Windows Authenitication method. I am in a school environment and do not want the workstation that may be unattended for serveral minutes to beable to just enter my SQL server.

Thanks

Cannot do it. If the SQL Server is set to Windows Authentication ONLY, then it will not ask for a second password.

However, the person logging in MUST have a LOGIN on SQL Server and that login must be set to use Windows Authentication.

Solution....lock your screen or log off when you are not at the computer.

If the server is in mixed mode will it ask for a second password?

Yes and No. Mixed mode allows both types of SQL Server logins. So the user must have their login as SQL Server authentication. In Enterprise Manager, expand down to Security, expand that and click on Logins. Right click on your login and select Properties. What authentication is your Login set to use (probably Windows). To change the authentication for a login, you must DROP the login and re-add it with the desired authentication.

Don't forget, if you want to change the way Enterprise Manager logs you in (after you've changed your login to a SQL Server only login) you may have to drop your server registration from EM and re-add it, click the Use SQL Server account, and then it will give you the option of prompting you for a password everytime you log into EM.

2 caveats.

1) If you leave EM open after you login and your computer is unlocked, then anyone can work on the box with your permissions.

2) You can only get the prompt if using a SQL Server login, not if using Windows Auth.
