Hello,

I have a Windows 2000 SBS running SQL Server 2000 w/ SP3. I have a database in SQL that I am trying to restore from a tape backup that was performed last week. Everytime I try to start the restore job, I get the following message:

MICROSOFT SQL-DMO (ODBC SQLState: 42000)
Error 3241: Media is incorrectly formed.
SQL Server cannot process this media family.

What is happening here, and what can I do to resolve this?

Thanks.

Was the backup created BY SQL Server or a third party app like Veritas??? Does it have a .bak extension?

Thanks

The backup was created using Veritas Backup Exec. I am trying to restore the database from the tape within SQL Enterprise Manager.....it has worked before, but now I get the error messages above.

How was the backup done by Veritas?

Did you use the Backup Exec SQL Agent? Or did you do a SQL Server backup and use Backup Exec to copy that file to tape? Or did you use SQL to make a backup directly to tape?

The way that it was backed up will determine how the restore needs to be done.

However you backed up SQL, do the steps backwards to restore it.

For example: If you used the BE SQL Agent to back it up, use the BE SQL Agent to restore it.

If you used SQL Server commands to back it up to disk and then BE to copy the backup file to tape, use BE to restore the file to disk and then use SQL Server RESTORE command to restore the database.

I used the SQL Agent on Backup Exec to backup the database. In the past, I could just go into SQL Enterprise Manager and restore the database off of tape from there, but now when I try that I get the message listed above.

If I use Backup Exec to restore the database, how would I go about restoring the data to a new database (a renamed version of the original database)?
