SQL plus crashes when sql statement is incorrect

Hi, we have an oracle 8 database on a NT box and uses sqlplus to query the table. However if we submit an incorrect sql statement the sqlplus crashes with the error message below

"..... The memory cannot be read"

How can we stop the sqlplus application from crashing?
