Yes, if you are on a client machine, you will need to have Net8 installed.
As for the user name, password, and connect string, your DBA should be able to help you with that.
In order for the connect string to work, you will have to configure the Net8 installation on your client machine. Use Net8 Assistant to do this - it will prompt you for the information that your DBA will give you, then format and write this information to your TNSNAMES.ORA file. After this is completed, you should be able to connect to the database.
thanks...
Here is the thing. I have been reading on Oracle for about 2 weeks. I'm usually working with Access and Web Development. Oracle is what I want to do in the future.
I got three discs. Oracle 8i suite.
-Developer 6.0
-Client 7.3.4
-Enterprise 8i.
What do I install first and where do I get the DBA and Net8 from.
I installed Enterprise 8i but when I want to install Developer, I can't put in in the same folder. Does it have to do there or can I install it in the different folder.
After I install the Developer, do I have to do any configurations???
When you try to install D2K, you will have to specify a new home and subdirectory for it.
Once it installs, you may have trouble connecting to your database; D2K installs its own Net8 configuration files. To overcome that problem, just copy the SQLNET.ORA and TNSNAMES.ORA from your Enterprise 8 NETWORK subdirectory into your D2K NETWORK subdirectory.
Hey Carp...
When I try to install Developer and specify a new home, it tells me that all the installed Oracle programs, in the existing home, will be disabled. When I use the same home, it does not allow it.
Softdrink - I'm afraid that you've been given bad information. Developer 6.0 must be installed first, in an Oracle Home directory designated as DEFAULT_HOME. Then you can install a database in some other Oracle Home. At this point, you may have to clear Oracle off your machine and start over. Oracle has a Technical Bulletin on its Metalink support site with full instructions for clearing Oracle off the machine.
Or - get Developer 6i instead, because it can be installed in any Oracle Home, not just DEFAULT_HOME.
Developer (any version) will come with Net8. Once you have both Developer and a database installed, and the database configured and running properly, use the Oracle Home Selector to switch to Developer's home. If the database that you created on your local machine is the only Oracle database that you want to use, you should be able to leave the service name field blank when you connect to it. If you use other Oracle databases, you'll need to configure Net8. HTH
i have two instances of oracle running on a solaris box, i am able to connect by a client to one instance but cannot connect to another instance. can someone help me??
