I currently have 8 drives

(2) 73GB SAS 15K
(6) 146GB SAS 15K

I was planning on mirroring the OS on the two 73GB drives, however I'm s not exactly sure how to setup the other 6 drives to work best with SQL 2005.

I can RAID-5 Disk 3-5 for the SQL DB, then RAID-5 Disk 6-8 for the transactions logs.

OR

I can RAID-10 (or RAID-50) all the drives together.

Any recommendations?

Transaction logs shouldn't be in RAID 5, since logs are sequential writes, I'd go for another RAID 1 for the logs and create a 4 drive RAID 5 for the data (or 3 drives and keep 1 as a hot spare).

Magnum,
This FAQ faq962-5747 is a good place to start.

As is this article.

(I'm biased, I wrote both of them.)
