I apologize if this is the wrong forum to post this question.

I have a production MS-SQL 2000 (standard) server.

I want to have a stand by secondary server that I can switch in case the production server goes down.

How can I replicate the data from the production server into the secondary server? Can I do this synchronization in real-time?

Depends whet you are looking for.
How much down time, what sort of disasters, how much data you can afford to lose.

Look at clustering, various sorts of replication, log shipping, code based solution in app, ....

Cursors are useful if you don't know sql.
DTS can be used in a similar way.
