Oracle Project Raptor (SQL Developer) will be rolled out soon and free if we use it against licensed Oracle DB. We use TOAD freeware. Would there be a reason for us to switch to SQL Developer from TOAD? Any features like support for CLOB etc...?

Any pointers/help will be appreciated

The free version of toad is faily old and won't support many of the new features of Oracle. The downside of raptor is that it will only support oracle 9i and above.

Exactly. A lot of this is normal behavior and shouldn't come as a surprise or create problems. For example, you will have not just one alert log, but one alert log for every instance in the cluster. If an error occurs that creates an alert log entry, it could be on any of the instances. You would have to check the alert logs on all the nodes to find the error, unless you happen to have additional information about where the activity occurred.

TOAD and LECCO have merged and the new version should be the best of each.

Be advised that Oracle's tools (jDeveloper, SQL Developer) require quite a bit of RAM. We've been running TOAD quite nicely on 512M; when we've gone to jDeveloper, we find that 1G is really the low threshold for acceptable performance, with 1.5G required before no real impact is noticed. We found that SQL Developer was much the same.

When it becomes doanloaded again dbSaint is a nice tool that resembles Toad. And it works with Oracle8i. The link to it is:

They are in the process of changing the licence to either freeware or shareware.

I find that TOAD has a better user interface design than SQL Developer.

I think of TOAD as a DBA tool. As a developer, I'll take PL/SQL Developer anyday.
