I'm getting a non-descript error trying to start SQL Server. It says it can't connect to the server, though I've verified it's credentials, and that the server is operating on 1433 and named pipes. Any pointers?

thanks

Pardon my typo, it's actually failing to start the Agent, not merely the server which is running. Event viewer says this:

Event Type: Error

Event Source: SQLSERVERAGENT

Event Category: Service Control

Event ID: 103

Date: 10/26/2005

Time: 4:16:30 PM

User: N/A

Computer: INSPEC3

Description:

SQLServerAgent could not be started (reason: Unable to connect to server '(local)'; SQLServerAgent cannot start).

Thanks all,

See if you can mine anything out of the SQL Agent's log at <DATA PATH>\log\sqlagent.out. At this point, I am not sure what the cause could be.

Check the SQLServerAgent service:

1. what login does it use, does the login have admin privileges?
2. check how the service is set to start, is it 'Disabled' or 'Manual'?

Check your firewall software. Many anti-virus's come with firewalls these days.

What happens if you try to start the agent manually?
