SQL Agent restore hangs at the start... 1

After doing a NT 4 disaster recovery on a test server using ArcServe 6.61, the system and data volumes went on great but as expected the SQL databases didn't work. We thought fine, just reinstall SQL Server and do a restore of the databases from tape. CA technical documents assure us it's possible and we followed them to the letter. BUT... we set up the restore job correctly, submit it and watch it start on the status screen. It finds the session and then ...does nothing!! It just hangs and you have to crash the job to stop it. We've reinstalled the products involved and still nothing. No errors in NT, ArcServe or Dbasql70 logs either.
Grrr.... Has anyone got any ideas?!!

Hope this helps
Solution1

Do backups through agent. After DR SQL will not be running. Re-install SQL and restore master
through SQL and then, other databases through SQL agent/ARCserve.

1.Do regular DR.
2.Re-create the MASTER DB using the rebuildm.exe utility found in the C:\MSSQL7\BINN directory with the exact parameters as the original DB.
3.Start the SQL Server service in single mode ("-m") from the cmd prompt or go into the SQL Enterprise Manager and right click on the server name
under the "SQL Server Group" and choose Properties. Under the General tab, choose the Startup parameters button. In the startup parameters
dialog box, type -m and click on the Add button. Then exit the SQL enterprise manager and stop and restart the MSSQLserver service.
4.Attempt to restore the MASTER DB using ARCserve thru the SQL Agent.

Solution2

Do an initial off-line backup of the MSSQL directory and then regular on line BUs.
In case of a DR restore the last off-line BU and afterwards the last on line BU.

;-)

I'm getting a "read/write error in named pipes" now when attempting to restore a database.
