I am at present evaluating version 8.6 and have installed the SQL agent on the backup server in order to back up our new accounting system server

I seem to be able to attach to the server as domain\ administrator and it successfully backs up the $shares. However, the SQL server does not connect during the backup job, even though I can enter the username and pasword in successfully and view all the files OK when I am setting up the job.

The error in the job log says "unable to connect to HOG-GP" and just skips thro to the last session which is System State, which it completes OK

Any ideas ?

Thanks in advance

Don't use SQL Agent!

If you REALLY have to use it, make sure you have all the latest patches/hot fixes. Which BUILD are you using? It should be 3878 (go to Help, select About Backup Exec, look at the version #).

What's the prefered method of backing up SQL Server?
Use the SQL Server BACKUP DATABASE commands and do the backup to disk. Then use BE to copy the backup file(s) to tape.

BTW-You say you have SQL Agent installed, how about REMOTE AGENT? You need that to backup files on a remote server and you need SQL Agent in addition to backup SQL Server files from the remote server.

Thanks Bill

Yes I have remote agent installed

Our suppliers of the accounting said it might be that the trial version didn't fully support it but I can't believe that. They have suggested that we might not use the SQL agent and just do a flat file backup anyway, although I would like to resolve the situation

The SQL agent in eval mode is the full agent. Remember, attaching to the server as a user, does not attach to the SQL Server the same. By default is uses the Service account that is running your Backup Exec Services. If this account does not have SA rights, you wont be able to access.

One other thing, you have to have Enterprise Manager installed on the Backup Server (actually you just need the connection tools, but its just as easy to install EM.)

I've used the SQL agent for years and never had a problem. Those flat file dumps are ok for small databases, but I had some pretty big ones that I didnt want to have to keep deleting all the time. Didnt have the space anyway.

Good luck.
