SQL 7 update locking and Access XP

I have a table in a SQL DB where I can not update existing records using Access XP. The message I get is that the record I am attempting to update is currently being updated by another user. I can insert new records and update them, but can't update any old records. This appears to be a problem with Access XP as I can change any of the old records using Access 97. (We recently updated from '97 to XP). XP handles updates to all the other tables in this database OK. It is as if XP thinks that every old record in the problem table is currently being updated.

Any Ideas ?
