SQL 6.5 Format Back-up Tape

I'm running SQL 6.5 on a W2K box. I have a Compaq 15/30 GB DLT tape back-up and I can't seem to find where to format the tape for the back-up. I just bought some new tapes but can't get them to work. Any help is appreciated.
