hello again,

This is 2005 Std on a Windows 2003 server

I need to remove 2205 so I can reinstall it and specify the correct Collation.

I'm connected to the server via Remote Desktop.

I have used the Remove Programs tool to "uninstall" teh various components... and these components have disappeared from the Add/Remove programs list.
Then I rebooted the server.

However, SQL Server 2005 still shows in Start-->Programs and all components are still installed.

Is this because I was connected via Remote Desktop, so they dont really get removed? Do you have to be actually at the
server to perform the Remove?

This is strange. Thanks, John

No you don't have to be on the server.

Since you are going to re-install you could just delete the SQL Server registry key.

Thanks for the idea, ptheriault.

Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, it has...

folder Microsoft SQL Server with subfolder of 90, BOL, MSSQL.1,.2 Reporting Services, Services etc

and another folder: MSSQLServer with subfolders Client, MSSQLServer, SETUP

I have saved/exported the registry file.

To just delete the SQL Server registry key, which folder is that in? Or should I just delete all the above folders?

Thanks, John

I would just delete the top level folder.

That worked, Paul. Then I was able to install again.

Everything's good now... except that - On this server - Management Studio will not start up. When I click it in Programs, it just gives a quick flash but does not open.

Any ideas? Thanks for your help very much!

I don't know if this will help but have you applied sp2 to the client tools?

I got it finally. Uninstalled SQL S then reinstalled. This time Mgmt Studio works.

THanks
