How can I take an existing database which is on an SQL 2005 EXPRESS server and put it on SQL 2000.

Can anyone explain??

backup/restore or attach/detach won't work......
The only way is script everything out and copying over the data, and if you have stuff that didn't exist in 2000 (window functions, PIVOT CTE vRACHAR(MAX) etc etc) then you will have to rewrite that code

Somewhere I read something about scripts

(desired db -> tasks -> Generate Scripts)

this does not work for some reason.

Is there really no other way to do it?

No there is no other way (AFAIK) the file structure is different
You can restore 2000 on 2005 but not vice versa
right click on the DB in SSMS
Tasks-->Generate Scripts
this will pop up a wizard, in the choose script options window make sure that you change script for Server Version to SQL server 2000
