I just completed a fresh install of SQL 2005 x64. I then downloaded service pack 3 and ran the install. When it came to selecting the components to upgrade I was unable to select the MSSQL>>>Database Service (it did find a number of components to upgrade), in fact I couldn't check or uncheck anything.

I know the service has been installed as can create new databases on this server.

I've tried going to MS site, read the readme files and done some google searches but can't find anything about this. Any ideas what's going on.

TIA

Additional info:
Here's the executble I downloaded and ran: SQLServer2005SP3-KB955706-x64-ENU.exe

Went to look for SP3 installation log files...they don't exist. Checked Control Panel to see if SP3 showed up and it's not there. However, SP3 did say it completed successfully.

Have you restarted the services and/or server yet?

Thanks

Have you double checked that it was SP3 for x64 and not x32 (which I assume would throw an error if you tried)?

Have you tried to reinstall SP3 to see if there was a difference?

Thanks

SQLServer2005SP3-KB955706-x64-ENU.exe this is the 64bit version and the one installed. Yes I tried installing it again.

Would the account that starts and stops the services have anything to do with this it was set to use the local admin account not a domain account?

It shouldn't ...

When you execute SELECT @@Version, what is returned?

Thanks

SELECT SERVERPROPERTY('productversion'), SERVERPROPERTY ('productlevel'), SERVERPROPERTY ('edition')
9.00.1399.06 RTM Enterprise Edition

SELECT @@VERSION
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.1399.06 (Intel X86) Oct 14 2005 00:33:37 Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft Corporation Enterprise Edition on Windows NT 5.2 (Build 3790: Service Pack 2)

Try installing SP2 and lets see if it gets you to build 3042.

Then we can install SP3 and work from there.

Thanks

Hold the presses, I think I know what happened. Someone other than myself installed sql server. After a little investigation I realized that the service installed was a 32bit version not the 64bit. Not sure how this happened but I am going to uninstall and reinstall.

Funny how all the other components installed as the 64bit version but the service did not. If someone has the answer to that I'd like to know.

I will update this ticket after the install is done.

That was the issue, it was the 32bit version of sql.

You can close this thread out.

Thanks for trying to help Jay!

Well at least I was half there when I relayed to you ...

Have you double checked that it was SP3 for x64 and not x32 (which I assume would throw an error if you tried)?

Good to hear you fixed it ...

Thanks
