2 caveats:

1. I am not a server or sql guy, I'm a network engineer
2. I inherited this sql server.

the question is such. I've found a maintenance plan, it set up to run monday through friday at 7:00 pm. I've found the location where the .bak file is supposed to be stored. all looks good as far as I can tell.

I browse to the backup location and find a .bak file that is several months old. I've looked through the event logs as well as the sql logs and cannot find anything that indicates the maint. plan backup is actually running or failing.

Lastly, I can manually execute the maint. plan and it runs a backup just fine.

is there anything obvious that needs to be checked to make sure its enabled and running according to schedule?

Is there a schedule actually set? You can see this through the maint plan wizard, or by looking at the SQL job that it creates.
Depending on which version of SQL you have (and I am kinda assuming 2000 here) they are held under the SQL Agent node.
Under the properties of the job, check out the schedule tab.

actually, its sql 2005. yes, its set to run daily but only monday through friday are checked. time is set to 7:00 pm. I'm using the sql console, dropping down through the tree to the maint. plan area, then double-clicking on either the subplan to see the schedule or the maint. plan box below it to view what its backing up and where its backing it up to.

Perhaps it has been disabled. If you look at the sql agent job, there is a check box for enabled. Ensure it is checked. Or when viewing as a maintenance plan, I think you can right click the individual tasks and enable them if they are disabled.

You can actually right click the sql agent jobs also to tell if they enabled/disabled without going into the detail of the job.

the enabled check box is marked, indicating it should be enabled.

OK, bear with us on this one...
Where did you look to get the backup location?
also, if you look at the jobs that the maint plan produced, to they have a history?

actually, I made 2 small tweaks that fixed it.

1. the schedule was set for weekly but only had monday through friday chosen. there isn't any reason not to run a backup on the weekends too, so I just changed it to daily.

2. the start date was set to march 13 2008. I changed it to yesterday's date. it never had an end date so I left it that way.

one of these 2 fixed the issue. I don't care enough to try one at a time to find out which one!

thanks for the help!

Also, it may have also been the fact that you "touched" it and therefore refreshed it.

Well done anyway :)
