Hi guys,

I have come across a very odd issue. First some background. We have had to apply very stringent security tightening to all aspects of the o/s and the database. I have sql 2005 sp2 installed on an sms server. When I try to run the hot fix for 3054 the installer does not see that sql is installed. If I try to rerun sp2 the database server is not an option. Any ideas on where to look? I am sure it is related to the security settings. Microsoft has looked at this for several days and is not suggesting we pull the server out of the domain which does not make any sense.

Thanks,

have you tried running it under either local admin or domain admin? If your IT guys won't give you access then force the issue until one of them does this.

Yes - we are running it under a local admin account (with the media copied locally) Same process we follow on all other servers with no issues :-(

are you at the server console or using rdp?

The server is a vm server so we tried via rdp (console mode) as well as through the virtual center console. Even tried using the windows update service since it was available in that tool, which says it installed successfully but, it did not.

I would say it is an issue with the VM then.

any idea on where the installer actually looks for the sql install? I am wondering if it is some kind of permissions missing on a reg key or something simple like that.

Try looking for an install log

It's not going to be a VMware problem. All VMware does is present fake hardware. The VMware tools are only keyboard, mouse, SCSI, NIC, video, etc drivers.

Is the SQL browser running?

I'd start with the log file for the hotfix and see what it says. What security changes were made to the system?
