Installing SQL Server 2005 on a server for use with an app that uses Windows authentication. However, potential down the line to also use a different app that requires mixed mode authentication. My question is - does it do any 'harm' to install with mixed mode now (just in case future app is installed that needs it), even though current app needs Windows authentication?

I don't think there is much of a downside but I think it's better practice to leave it in Windows mode and then switch it to mixed mode if the need ever arises. It's not a one of those decisions that you can't switch back and forth down the road.

the only down side with having a mixed mode now would be a small increase of your security risk with someone guessing your sa password, frankly, with a reasonable password, this risk is minimal.

If you're really worried, you can create an admin account other than sa, and then delete sa...

I'd always set it up to use mixed mode since it allows you a way into onto the server even when you're not logged on as part of the network, which can happen...
