2005 Newbie Question:

Installed 2005 Enterprise (Trial License) on my Dev machine that is already running SQL 2000 to get up to speed on 2005 and prepare for 2008. When running Mgmt Studio, I can register & bring up the existing SQL 2K Server instance with all the dbs etc and run everything in compat mode. No problem.

Now I want to create a server instance in 2005, to start building dbs, reports etc all running under 2005. I want both the 2000 server instance running and register a new server instance of 2005. In Mgmt Studio, when I try to register a 2005 server, the only thing that pops up is the SQL2000 server instance(the computer name). If I use "LOCALHOST", it just creates another instance of the same 2K server, in version 8.0.

Do I have to convert all my DBs over to 2005 first? Can I register servers in both 2000 (compat mode) and 2005 versions on the same machine?

Yes, you will need to install the database service as a named instance.

When you installed SQL 2005 did you select to install the SQL Server Service? If you did, and you didn't specify a named instance then you upgraded the default instance from SQL 2000 to SQL 2005.

You can only have a single default instance on the server. After you have both instances installed you can register them both from the SQL 2005 tools.
